Volitans Software was founded on February 22, 2007, by Matthew J. Butch, to sell SMART Utility. He conceived of the idea of SMART Utility because he wanted a better way to test hard drives in his job as an on-site Macintosh Technician. That was many jobs ago now, as he has moved on to further his career. But Volitans Software is always first in his heart.
The name Volitans comes from the scientific name of the Red Lionfish.
Volitans Software operates out of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, where Matthew lives with his wife and two sons.
SMART Utility 1.0 was released June 15, 2007. In the 9 years since then, every update was free. However, the time has come to charge an update price. Continue readingBackblaze has posted their Hard Drive Reliability Review for 2015 . As always some very interesting information there. HGST seems to have the best reliability, but they note they buy Seagate drives because they alert their failures better via SMART. Something to keep in mind!
