Now Available Over IPv6

I’ve added an IPv6 address for the website, so if you have an IPv6 connection you will be able to connect that way. Since Apple is pushing towards more use of IPv6, and as more users adopt IPv6, it only makes sense to support it.

Let us know if you have any issues!

SMART Utility and MacOS Sierra

SMART Utility 3.2.2 has been tested with the MacOS Sierra developer beta. It is almost fully functional, except for two issues discovered:

  • Crashing on first attempt to install the SAT SMART Driver
  • Crashing on running a drive test

An update will be released before Sierra is released to the public in the fall. This will still be on the 3.x version. Remember that version 4.0 will be out in the fall, and that its a paid update. However, we wanted to be sure that current customers who do not choose to update can continue to use the current version in full.

SMART Utility Upgrade Pricing Announcement

SMART Utility 1.0 was released June 15, 2007. In the 9 years since then, every update was free. However, the time has come to charge an update price. Version 4.0 will be a significant rewrite with large additional features. This includes a GUI overhaul.

Version 4.0 will be released in approximately six months. Pricing has not been set for version 4.0, but it is only fair to announce ahead of time that the the update will not be free. However, any purchase after today (May 1st, 2016) will not be charged an update fee.

SMART Utility not vulnerable to Sparkle attack

As some of you may have read, there is a security vulnerability in apps that use the Sparkle app updating framework. However, this only affects apps that use HTTP connections for updating. While SMART Utility does use the Sparkle framework, it uses HTTPS on the backend (as does this site), preventing it from being vulnerable.

However, the next update will include the new version as an added protection. Look for it soon!
